Timothy J. McCallion ’75, ’81M
An Erie native and Cathedral Preparatory School graduate, Tim McCallion chose to continue his Catholic education by obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in business management and an MBA from Gannon.
Mr. McCallion felt a calling to begin his professional career in telecommunications. In 1976, shortly after receiving his first degree and while obtaining his second, he began work as an accounting assistant for GTE in Erie. After a series of promotions took him to Ohio, Indiana, Connecticut and Hawaii, in 1993 he was named GTE’s west area vice president of government affairs, based in Thousand Oaks, Calif. In June 2000, Mr. McCallion was named the first west region president of Verizon, which was created from the merger of GTE and Bell Atlantic. He is responsible for government affairs, regulatory affairs and community relations in Verizon’s western region, encompassing 13 states. He has offices in both Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Irvine, Calif.
Mr. McCallion is a strong believer in the importance of community and church involvement and is actively involved with several community-based and business organizations. He currently serves on the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors (chairman, 2008), the Los Angeles Urban League, the California Business Roundtable, the Ventura County Community Foundation (vice chairman and treasurer), the California Foundation on the Environment and the Economy, the California Chamber of Commerce and the Asian Pacific American Legal Center.
Mr. McCallion is a dedicated member of the United Way of Ventura County, having served on the executive board as co-chair, vice-chair and campaign chair. He also acted as Verizon’s executive chair on several annual United Way campaigns. He has provided leadership to the boards of the Los Angeles Children’s Museum and the Ventura County YMCA, and served as a chairman of the California Telephone Association from 1999-2001.
Mr. McCallion was inducted into the Independent Telephone Pioneer Association’s Hall of Fame on Sept. 29th, 2001 in recognition of his distinguished career with GTE. In 2006, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Mr. McCallion to the California Broadband Task Force.
Mr. McCallion and his wife, Anne (Dewey) McCallion ’74, reside in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Mr. McCallion is an avid reader, enjoys the theater, exercises regularly and is planning hikes with grandson.
