GU eNews, Gannon Alumni e-newsletter

Volume X, Issue 5       Welcome, , to your GU eNEWS       May 1, 2011
A Message from Campus Ministry
We live in mindful solidarity with our alumni and with their families, friends and communities in the southern and mid-western state whose lives have been overturned by loss of loved ones and devastation of property due to the continuing catastrophic weather. Gannon University will pray especially during the Mother's Day liturgy on May 8, that we may manifest our compassion and generosity in support of victims, especially for their resilience to rebuild their lives.

Celebrate Cinco De Mayo at Antlers
Remember when Cinco De Mayo fell near finals week and you were caught between celebrating and studying? This year, forget the books. Reminisce and celebrate the good ol’ times at a GU neighbor and favorite hangout. The University will take ownership of Antlers Pub on May 15 as a student-run programming facility, hosting a variety of student and alumni events. The Alumni Association invites you to an Antlers “Last Call” exclusively for Gannon and Villa Maria College alumni on May 5 from 7-9 p.m. Join your fellow alumni for a drink or two—your first drink is on us! Special Celebration for the Garibaldis
More than 300 Gannon students, faculty, staff, alumni and Erie community leaders gathered in the Yehl Ballroom on April 7 to wish Dr. Antoine and Mrs. Carol Garibaldi well as they prepare to move to Detroit. Dr. Garibaldi will assume duties as president of the University of Detroit Mercy in July. Several presentations were made at the special celebration and you can read Dr. Garibaldi’s words to his well-wishers HERE.

Speakers, Visitors Share Knowledge
April was jam-packed with visits by well-known and knowledgeable speakers on campus. On April 12, alumnus Kurt Duska ’87 (left), president of Engineered Plastics in Erie, discussed the importance of plastics recycling as the spring Business Ambassadors speaker. Poet Cornelius Eady was the featured speaker during Gannon’s annual English Awards Night on April 13, and on April 14, Dr. Sol Messinger, described his experiences as a Holocaust survivor. Alumnus Todd Warren ’96 returned to campus April 18 to share his inspiring story after being diagnosed with dyslexia. In total, more than 400 individuals attended these events.

Gannon in the News
Read all about it! Gannon University is a newsmaker, in Erie and beyond. A $24 million grant from The Council for Opportunity in Education will help Gannon students prepare high school students for college. Gannon alumnus Msgr. Mark Bartchak '77 was ordained as the Bishop of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnston, Pa. on April 20. Do you know someone who might be interested in Gannon’s computer and information science programs? Send them the link to this video, which includes interviews with Dr. Garibaldi, Dr. Frezza, Dr. Vitolo and students. Keep up with all the current Gannon news at and on Gannon’s Facebook page.

Living Our Faith
Despite gloomy weather, alumni and friends gathered on April 16 to participate with Gannon in the United Way Day of Caring. With the help of the Friends of Gridley Park, neighbors, students, parents and staff from Emerson Gridley School, the group picked up litter, removed branches and sticks, raked banana leaves, mulched trees and cleaned graffiti from street signs. Thanks to all who came out in support, and stay tuned for details about how you can join us for Alumni GIVE (Gannon's Invitation to Volunteer Everywhere) Day in the fall.
